DDR3L operates at a lower voltage than DDR3 memory – 1.35V versus 1.5V. This lower operating voltage makes it more energy efficient.
Thanks to its ability to run at 1.35 volts, DDR3L also produces less heat. Because heat can result in thermal throttling, memory that produces less heat is better able to maintain peak performance and improves overall system reliability.
Backwards-compatible with both 1.35V and 1.5V – DDR3L can also work with DDR3 memory in systems that already contain DDR3 memory. The 2133 speed grade is backwards-compatible with 1866, 1600, and 1333 speed grades.
